Recovering West African Lion Populations

Senegal’s Department of National Parks (DPN) and Panthera have partnered to successfully GPS collar six Critically Endangered West African lions in Niokolo-Koba National Park, a first for the country. This lion conservation initiative was formed in order to safeguard the last couple of West African lions in the park before it’s too late. GPS collars will provide critical data on the region’s lions and assist in the protection of both them and their prey by improving preventive measures. Data collected from these lions will help guide conservationists in developing calculated anti-poaching methods by tracking their whereabouts and studying the areas where lions were eliminated due to inadequate protection in the past.
